Space Invaders is one of the most influential video games ever made, credited with helping launch the entire golden age of arcade gaming back in 1978, and this version brings its tense wave-based combat to your browser. A grid of alien invaders marches steadily back and forth across the top of the screen, slowly but relentlessly descending closer to your position every time the formation reaches the edge of the play area, and your only defense is a small ship you steer left and right along the bottom, firing bolts straight upward to thin their ranks. Every alien you destroy brings you one step closer to clearing the wave, but the shrinking formation actually speeds up as fewer aliens remain, creating mounting tension right up to the final few shots. You have three lives to work with across the whole game, and letting the alien formation descend far enough to reach your ship costs you dearly, so smart play means balancing offense with defense and never letting a stray alien slip through unchallenged. Clear an entire wave and a brand new formation appears, ready to test your reflexes and nerve all over again.
